Green algae in pool is one of the most common and frustrating issues that pool owners face. This microscopic plant life thrives in warm, stagnant water with an imbalance of chemicals, turning a clear oasis into a murky, slippery hazard. While its presence is a clear sign that your water chemistry is off, understanding the specific type and lifecycle of the algae is the first step toward restoring clarity and safety.
Identifying the Different Types of Green Algae
Not all green algae look the same, and identifying the specific variant dictates the most effective removal strategy. Pool owners typically encounter three main types, each with distinct characteristics and stubbornness.
Green Dust Algae
Often mistaken for mineral deposits or pollen, green dust algae forms a fine, dusty layer on pool surfaces. It is notoriously difficult to brush off and can quickly spread if not treated aggressively with a heavy dose of sanitizer and proper filtration.

Green Mustard Algae
Common in cooler climates, mustard algae looks like a yellowish-green dust that brushes off easily but quickly returns. It has a particular resilience to standard chlorine levels, often requiring stronger shock treatments and specialized algaecides to eradicate completely.
Green Black Algae
The most stubborn and problematic variety, green black algae has a protective outer layer that shields it from normal sanitization. It often takes root in cracks and crevices of plaster or grout, appearing as dark green or black spots that resist brushing.
Understanding How Algae Takes Hold
Algae spores are airborne and virtually impossible to keep out of the water entirely. They become a problem when conditions are ideal for growth. This usually happens when the pool’s filtration system is not running long enough, the water’s pH is too high, or the sanitizer levels (like chlorine) are too low to kill the organisms.

Immediate Removal and Cleaning Procedures
Treating green algae requires a multi-step process that goes beyond simply adding more chlorine. Mechanical removal is just as important as chemical treatment to ensure the algae is physically eliminated from the pool.
- Brush vigorously: Use a stiff pool brush to scrub all surfaces—walls, floors, and steps—to break up the protective layer of the algae colonies.
- Vacuum thoroughly: After brushing, vacuum the pool on the "waste" setting if available, or to waste, to prevent the algae from spreading through the filter.
- Shock the pool: Apply a concentrated dose of calcium hypochlorite shock to destroy the algae bloom. Super-chlorination is essential for killing the contaminants.
Chemical Balance and Prevention
Once the visible algae is gone, the focus shifts to water balance and prevention. Algae will return if the water chemistry is not maintained correctly. The goal is to create an environment that is hostile to algae growth but comfortable for swimmers.
Test the water regularly to ensure the pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6, as this range allows chlorine to work most effectively. Maintain a free chlorine level of 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm) and ensure the cyanuric acid (stabilizer) level is appropriate to prevent sunlight from degrading the chlorine too quickly.

The Role of Filtration
Even with perfect chemical balance, a failing filtration system guarantees an algae problem. The filter is responsible of trapping the dead algae and debris removed during the cleaning process. For established algae growth, running the pump continuously for 24 to 48 hours after treatment is necessary to clear the water.
Depending on the type of filter—sand, cartridge, or DE—periodic cleaning or replacement is required. A clogged filter cannot trap particles efficiently, leading to cloudy water and a higher chance of recurring algae blooms.
