Confirming the Culprit

Carpenter ants are typically large, measuring up to half an inch in length, and are often black, though some species exhibit reddish or yellowish hues. A key distinguishing feature is their presence; you will likely see them foraging at night. Confirm an active infestation by looking for fresh piles of coarse sawdust, known as frass, which falls from small exit holes in the wood. Hearing faint rustling or crunching noises within the trunk is another strong indicator that a colony is actively tunneling.
Assessing the Scope of the Infestation
Not every carpenter ant found on a tree originates from that tree. These pests are opportunistic and may establish a primary nest in decaying wood while satellite colonies form in drier, sounder structures nearby. It is critical to determine whether the tree itself is the main nesting site. If the frass is fresh and the wood feels hollow when tapped, the tree is likely hosting a primary colony.
