Running a new cable through an existing wall is often the most direct solution for extending internet connectivity, installing a security camera, or adding a speaker system to a distant room. While the concept is simple, the execution requires a methodical approach to avoid damaging structural components or leaving the wire exposed. This guide walks through the essential techniques, from initial planning to the final connection, ensuring a clean and successful installation.
Planning the Route and Gathering Tools
Before touching a single tool, a clear plan is necessary. Determine the start and end points, and identify the path the cable will take, ideally avoiding studs and electrical wiring. Measuring the distance is crucial for selecting the correct cable type, such as Cat6 for future-proof networking or coaxial for video distribution. Beyond the cable itself, the process relies on a few key tools: a fish tape or sturdy rod for pushing the wire through, a rotary hammer drill for creating the access holes, and proper safety equipment like safety glasses and gloves.
Mapping the Path with a Stud Finder
Locating the vertical wooden studs inside the wall is a critical safety step. These dense materials will block a fish tape and make drilling difficult, forcing a longer and more complicated path. By scanning the wall with a stud finder, you can mark the locations of these obstacles on the surface. This allows you to drill horizontally through the top or bottom plate of the wall, running the cable parallel to the studs without the risk of hitting them, which ensures a smoother passage for the wiring.

Creating the Entry and Exit Points
With the route mapped, the physical work begins by creating access points. For finished walls, this usually means drilling a small hole in the top corner of the wall segment. If the wall is covered with drywall, cutting a small inspection hole with a keyhole saw provides a better view of the space and allows for easier maneuvering of the tools. The goal is to create two openings: one where the wire will exit the starting room and another where it will enter the destination room, ensuring the path between them is clear of obstacles.
Navigating Obstacles and Using the Fish Tape
Once the holes are open, the fish tape is inserted into the starting hole, aiming toward the exit point. If the wall cavity is empty, the process is straightforward; however, most walls contain electrical wiring or insulation. When encountering an obstruction, gently maneuver the tape around the object rather than forcing it, which can bend the tape and ruin the line. A helpful technique is to have a partner in the destination room gently jiggle the cable or tape to help guide it into the opening, making the connection between the two points much easier to establish.
Pulling the Cable Through the Cavity
With the fish tape successfully snaked through to the exit hole, the next step is securing the cable to the tape. This is done using electrical tape, wrapping the connection tightly so the cable does not catch on the rough edges of the drywall. The pulling process requires a balance of force and care; applying steady, moderate pressure is effective, while a sudden jerk might snap the wire inside the wall. As the tape is pulled back through, the cable follows, leaving a clean run through the empty wall cavity, ready for the final connection.

After the wire is completely through, the temporary access holes are sealed with spackle or putty, restoring the wall's surface. The connectors at either end can then be attached to the intended device, router, or speaker.
