When the adhesive is resistant to scraping or covers a large area, chemical solvents provide a powerful alternative. These products are designed to penetrate and soften the binder in the adhesive, transforming it into a pliable mass that can be easily scraped away.
Apply the solvent to the adhesive using a pump sprayer or a soaked rag, allowing it to dwell for the recommended time—usually 15 to 30 minutes. Do not let the solvent dry out, as this reduces its effectiveness. Once the adhesive has softened, use a long-handled scraper to lift the material in wide sheets. It is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding ventilation and disposal, as these chemicals can be potent.

Steam Removal: A High-Efficiency Option
For water-based mastics or situations where chemical use is undesirable, a commercial floor steamer is an excellent tool. The high-temperature steam penetrates the adhesive without the use of harsh fumes, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The heat breaks the bond between the adhesive and the tile, allowing for relatively easy scraping.
While effective, steaming is a slow process that requires patience. The subfloor must be dried thoroughly after steaming to prevent moisture-related issues with new flooring. This method is particularly useful when removing adhesive from resilient flooring over concrete, as it minimizes the risk of cracking the substrate.
Subfloor Repair and Preparation
Once the adhesive is removed, the condition of the subfloor must be evaluated. It is common for the old adhesive to bond to the subfloor, pulling up fibers or creating an uneven surface.
