Levelness and Flatness
Concrete floors and walls are often poured without precision, resulting in significant undulations. You need to determine how uneven the surface is by placing a long level or a straight 2x4 across the wall or floor. Large deviations will require self-leveling compound or shims later in the process, so measure these gaps with a tape measure and document them.

Moisture Management
Moisture is the enemy of drywall on concrete. You must determine if the concrete is dry or if it is subject to hydrostatic pressure. A simple plastic sheet test involves taping a square of plastic to the concrete for 24 hours; if moisture condenses underneath, you are dealing with vapor intrusion.
