Understanding the Role of Underlayment
Before you unroll the product, it is essential to understand why it is necessary. Engineered hardwood is dimensionally stable, but it still needs a consistent surface to be installed upon. Underlayment provides this by smoothing out minor cracks and debris in the subfloor. It also provides essential acoustic insulation, reducing the hollow sound of footsteps and transferring impact noise to the rooms below. Depending on the specific product, it can also act as a vapor barrier, preventing moisture from wicking up into the hardwood planks and causing warping or buckling.
Types of Underlayment Materials
Not all underlayments are created equal, and choosing the right one depends on your specific environment and subfloor type. Here are the most common types you will encounter in the market:

- Felt/Black Paper: The traditional choice, offering basic cushioning and vapor resistance. It is typically installed with a double-stick adhesive.
- Closed-Cell Foam: Made from polyethylene foam, this is highly resistant to moisture and provides excellent impact noise reduction. It is usually glued down or used with click-lock flooring.
- Rubber: Often made from recycled tire material, rubber underlayment offers superior sound dampening and insulation. It is ideal for multi-story residential projects.
- Calcium Silicate: A rigid board used specifically over concrete slabs. It creates a level surface and blocks moisture vapor effectively.
Preparation is Key
You cannot successfully install underlayment on a dirty or uneven surface. The subfloor must be structurally sound, clean, and dry. Sweep and vacuum the entire area thoroughly to remove any dust, grit, or debris that could create bumps under the new floor. Fill any significant dips or holes with a self-leveling compound to ensure a flat surface. If you are installing over a moisture-sensitive area like a basement or on concrete, ensure the slab is tested and dry, or use a dedicated plastic vapor barrier to protect the hardwood.

Rolling Out the Underlayment
Begin in the farthest corner of the room, farthest from the main entrance. Unroll the underlayment perpendicular to the direction the hardwood planks will be laid. This usually means running the planks parallel to the longest wall of the room, so the underlayment rolls should run perpendicular to that. As you unroll, use a broom or your hands to lightly brush out any wrinkles or bubbles. The goal is to achieve a smooth, taut surface without stretching the material, which could cause it to tear later.

Sealing the Joints
When you roll out the perimeter of the room, you will need to overlap the edges of the underlayment. Do not cut these to exact length yet. Instead, overlap them by about two to three inches. To prevent moisture from seeping through these vulnerable seams, apply seam tape over the top. Smooth the tape down firmly to create a waterproof barrier. Once the entire floor is covered and sealed, you can use a straight edge and utility knife to trim the edges flush with the baseboards, leaving a small expansion gap of about a quarter-inch where the floor meets the wall.
With the underlayment securely installed and the seams taped, the subfloor is now ready to receive the engineered hardwood. You will have a flat, quiet, and moisture-resistant base that allows the flooring to perform as it should. Take the time to do this step meticulously, as it is the foundation of a beautiful and durable floor that will last for years.
