Misalignment, or malocclusion, is the most common reason
people
see an orthodontist. It's hereditary and is the result of size differences between the upper and lower jaw, or between the jaw and the teeth.
Malocclusion leads to tooth overcrowding, a misshapen jaw, or irregular bite patterns. Malocclusion is usually treated with:
braces or dental appliances
metal, ceramic, or plastic square bonds are attached to the teeth. A set of wires or springs apply force and move teeth into alignment. Patients with minor malocclusion often use clear braces, called aligners, instead of traditional braces. Some patients may need headgear to help move teeth into alignment with pressure from outside the mouth.
Private treatment is widely available. Fees for private orthodontic treatment usually starts around €3,500 but can be much higher. Tax relief on dental treatment is available though the med2 scheme. Patients or parents can claim back 20% of the private treatment cost against their income tax.
Orthodontics [a] [b] is a dentistry specialty that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns. It may also address the modification of facial growth, known as dentofacial orthopedics. Abnormal alignment of the teeth and jaws is very common. Nearly 50% of the developed world 's population, according to the american association of orthodontics, has malocclusions severe enough to benefit from orthodontic treatment. [ citation needed ]: although this figure decreases to less than 10% according to the same aao statement when referring to medically necessary orthodontics. However, conclusive scientific evidence for the health benefits of orthodontic treatment is lacking, although patients with completed orthodontic treatment have reported a higher quality of life than that of untreated patients undergoing orthodontic treatment.
Invisalign has several treatment options available for teenagers, depending on the stage of teeth development. Some teenagers will be suitable for the same invisalign treatment as adult patients. Younger teenagers, or those whose adult teeth have not yet erupted can be treated with invisalign teen – a treatment designed specifically for teenagers.
