Granville Island, once called Industrial Island as it was filled with factories that pumped out materials such as nails, barrels and chains, was born in 1886. Gilley Brothers, which eventually became Ocean Concrete in the mid-1950s, specialized in selling cement, aggregate and coal from its waterfront home on the peninsula. The island was sculpted as a unique blend of retail, maritime, light industrial, recreational, and touristy areas.
For years there was an art school that anchored part of the island, but it has since had to move itself into larger quarters-on a floodplain, of all things. Ocean Concrete is Granville Island's oldest tenant and now also its. Ocean Concrete is apparently a very decent company because I spoke to a long time manager who had nothing but praise for the owners.
