Building a foldable dice table can be a rewarding DIY project, adding a touch of personalization to your gaming sessions. It allows you to easily store and set up your gaming area, making it perfect for those with limited space. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your own.
Before you start, gather your materials. You'll need a large piece of foam board, fabric for the tabletop and sides, Velcro or buttons for hinges, scissors, a ruler, a pencil, and a hot glue gun. Choose a fabric that's easy to clean and complements your gaming style.
Designing Your Dice Table
First, decide on the size of your dice table. A standard size is 24" x 36", but you can adjust this based on your needs. Sketch your design on paper, including the dimensions and any additional features like pockets for dice or cups.
Next, transfer your design onto the foam board. Use a ruler and pencil to draw the outline of your table, including the sides and any additional features. Remember to account for the thickness of the foam board when drawing your lines.
Cutting the Foam Board
Carefully cut along the lines you've drawn using scissors or a craft knife. Foam board is easy to cut, but be patient and take your time to ensure straight, clean lines. You'll need to cut out the main tabletop piece and the side pieces.
For the sides, you'll need to create hinges. You can do this by cutting small rectangles out of the foam board where you want your hinges to be. These will be covered by your fabric later.
Covering the Foam Board with Fabric
Lay your fabric out flat and place your foam board pieces on top. Trace around the edges of the foam board onto the fabric, adding an extra inch or two for overlap. Cut out the fabric pieces, making sure to cut along the lines you've traced.
Use a hot glue gun to attach the fabric to the foam board. Start at one corner and work your way around the edge, pulling the fabric taut as you go. Make sure to cover the edges of the foam board completely to prevent any rough edges from poking through.
Creating the Hinges
Now it's time to create the hinges that will allow your dice table to fold. You can use Velcro or buttons for this. If you're using Velcro, cut out small pieces and attach them to the inside of the side pieces, making sure they align with the hinges you cut earlier.
If you're using buttons, sew them onto the inside of the side pieces, again making sure they align with the hinges. You'll also need to sew corresponding buttonholes onto the main tabletop piece. Once you've sewn the buttons onto the side pieces, you can attach the side pieces to the main tabletop piece by pushing the buttons through the buttonholes.
Adding Additional Features
If you've designed your dice table to include additional features like pockets or cups, now is the time to add them. You can use fabric to create these features, sewing them onto the main tabletop piece or the sides as needed.
For example, to create a pocket for your dice, cut out a piece of fabric in the shape you want, with an extra inch or two for overlap. Sew the edges of the fabric to the main tabletop piece, leaving the top open for access.
