I've had 3 E46's (330i, 330Ci and M3), currently have 2 e39s in the fleet (530i and 540i), the e39 is just an incredible all rounder and for a daily, I would always choose the e39, it's definitely better built (quieter, smoother and comfier). The V8's pack a better punch but the straight 6's handle better due to having the rack and pinion steering. My choice would be 525i, 528i or.
