So finally! BMW HAVE issued a new and improved fuel strip for the R1200R at least and this is promised to cure the problem. It was issed last october and i spoke with the local BMW dealer and they have not had one fail at all since fitting the new item. The part number is: 16141600133 and costs.

Attached is a photo of the Piezo lighter that I removed from a gas fire in the house. It has one wire, which fits perfectly onto the terminals of the fuel strip.
