The X3 M40i is a very capable car. Actually one of the best BMW SUVs today, in my opinion. It's also a bit softer in ride than the X3M. Of course, the X3M is the more fun and powerful car. But I think the X3 M40i is a more than enough for most people.
I had a 22 X3 M40i and now have a 22 X3 M Competition and they drive very differently. One of the first things is the ride quality. I recently drove the M40i 1200 miles over 2 days. In "Comfort" mode it was an easy drive. The MC is a much firmer ride even in comfort. The M40i had more low end torque. The M likes the revs.
