Hi All-- Can you all shake out some of those facts you have stored up and give me a comparison, as far as quality, power, endurance, fuel efficiency, etc. between a 22r/22re and the 4 cyl Nissan with the eight plugs? Also the availability/cost of rebuilds? Also the 5 spd v. Toy 4 spd trannys? and the proneness of the earlier Nissan (1984) chassis v. Toy to rust? Thanks!
so its fact that toyotas are superior trucks to all others. indestructible 22r/re, strong axles, built well, very durable. but whats the difference between ifs 4cyl yota pickups and same year 4cyl nissans? i hear the axles are very similar and their both jap trucks. why arent ifs nissans up till.
With the choices of 2.3L Ford, the 22RE Toyota, and Z24 Nissan motor what would everyone choose? I went to several junk yards looking for axles, engines and front spindles.

Meta Title:
The 22R/E is arguably the best motor that Toyota has ever built. Yes, even more so than the 2JZ. We stock replacement parts all day everyday for the Truck/4Runner of those years, and there's a good reason for that.
i found a pretty much junked '88 Hardbody, but it "runs". havent looked at it yet. the thing is, i'm toying around with ideas for engine swaps. i'm leaning either towards a mid-80s Nissan engine/tranny or a Toyota 20 or 22r engine/tranny to swap into a car.

All 22R and RE's from 1985 up are the same, and will NOT interchange with the pre-1985 22R and RE's. The "E" denotes EFI, so a post '85 could be an R or RE depending on whether it was carbed of injected. The pre-85 EFI is different than the '85+, and won't interchange. Also, 22R's were available with carburetors until the early '90's.
