Understanding the Critical Dimensions

Before cutting a single piece of lumber, you must understand the relationship between the rough opening and the finished door size. The rough opening is intentionally larger than the door itself to provide space for adjustments and drywall thickness. Industry standards dictate that you add specific increments to the final door size to determine the rough opening dimensions to ensure a proper fit that allows for shimming and finishing.
Calculating the Width

To calculate the width of the rough opening, take the width of the door unit and add 2 inches. One inch is added to each side to accommodate the standard stud thickness and allow for leveling during installation. For example, a standard 30-inch door requires a rough opening of 32 inches. This extra space is vital for aligning the frame perfectly vertically and horizontally before the drywall goes up.
Calculating the Height

Determining the height follows a similar principle with a slight variation. You should add 2 and a half inches to the door’s height. This accounts for the thickness of the header and any potential unevenness in the subfloor. A 6-foot, 8-inch door, therefore, requires a rough opening of 7 feet to ensure the frame sits flat and the door swings freely without binding at the bottom.

Start by locating the center point of the proposed opening on the subfloor. Measure outward to the left and right to mark the width of the rough opening. Snap a chalk line or use a long level to connect these points, creating a straight vertical line for the inner faces of the king studs. Then, measure the distance of the rough opening height up from the subfloor and mark the top of the bottom plate. This creates a rectangle on the floor that guides the placement of the entire frame.
Installing the Bottom Plate and King Studs
With the layout confirmed, you can begin assembling the frame on the floor before raising it. Align the bottom plate with your chalk lines and secure it to the subfloor using construction adhesive and nails or screws. Ensure the plate is straight by checking it with a long level. Once the bottom plate is set, position the king studs vertically inside the layout lines. The outside edges of the king studs should sit exactly on the outer chalk lines you marked for the width of the opening. Fasten them securely to the bottom plate using nails or screws, ensuring they are perfectly plumb.
Building and Installing the Header
The header is the load-bearing component that spans the top of the opening and transfers the weight of the wall above to the king studs. To create a standard header, cut a piece of blocking (called a jack stud) to fit tightly between the king studs directly below where the header will sit. Place this blocking at the correct height to match the top of the rough opening.
Next, position the doubled header board on top of these jack studs so that it spans the entire width of the opening. The header must sit flush with the faces of the king studs. Secure the header to the jack studs with nails or screws, and then fasten the header assembly back to the king studs with nails or screws running through the king studs and into the side of the header. This creates a rigid box that prevents movement and sagging.
Adding Cripple Studs and Final Plumbing
Once the header is installed, the vertical alignment of the frame must be finalized. Measure and cut cripple studs to fit snugly between the top of the header and the bottom of the top plate, which will eventually be installed on top of the frame. Place these cripples evenly, usually every 16 inches on center, to provide consistent support for the drywall.
With the complete wall frame assembled on the floor, a partner is helpful for raising it into position. Lift the frame into the basement opening and brace it with shims between the frame and the existing basement walls. Use your level to check the assembly vertically (plumb) from corner to corner and horizontally (level) across the top and bottom. Drive shims into gaps and adjust until the frame is perfectly aligned, then secure it to the surrounding walls and floor with nails or screws to lock it permanently in place.
