Steam Bathroom Croup

A child with a seal-like, barking croup cough, can usually be treated at home. Try steam, cold air and plenty of down time. Here are some home remedies to help with croup in children, such as steam inhalation, essential oil massage, honey, and so on.

Use a cool-mist humidifier, sit in the bathroom with the shower running hot to create steam, or take your child out into the cold night air for a few minutes while wrapped up to stay warm. Take your child into the bathroom, close the door, and steam up the room by running hot water through the shower. Sit with your child in the bathroom, not in the shower.

Hold your child to reduce the chance that they may get too close to the hot water and get burned. Take your child outside to breathe in the cool night air. A steamy bathroom can also help relieve a croup "attack".

Steam up the bathroom by turning on the hot water in your shower, and then sit with your child for 10. A steam shower or steamy bathroom can offer gentle, natural relief for mild croup symptoms. Always supervise your child during steam therapy, and keep sessions short.

Run a hot shower to create steam. Do NOT put your child in the hot shower. Instead, close the bathroom door and let the room fill with steam.

Have your child breathe in the moist air for 10-15 minutes. If your child's breathing does not get better with steam, take him or her outside. You can also sit with the child in a bathroom filled with steam created by running hot water from the shower.
