A lawn mower striper is an attachment that creates stripes on your lawn by alternating the direction of the grass blades as you mow. This illusion of stripes is achieved by using a roller or a series of wheels that bend the grass blades in one direction, while the mower cuts them in the opposite direction. The result is a beautiful, professional-looking lawn that's sure to impress.

Step 1: Measure and Cut the PVC Pipe

First, measure and mark the 2" PVC pipe at 12" intervals. These will be the individual roller sections that create the stripes. Using a hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter, cut the pipe into 12" sections. You'll need about 8-10 sections, depending on the width of your mower.

Step 2: Assemble the PVC Rollers

Apply PVC primer to the ends of each 2" PVC section and the inside of the 4" PVC pipe caps. Then, apply PVC cement to the primed areas. Insert one end of a 2" PVC section into a cap and allow it to dry. Repeat this process for all the 2" PVC sections. Once dry, you'll have your individual rollers.

Step 3: Create the Striper Frame

Measure and cut the 4" PVC pipe into two 48" sections. These will serve as the frame that holds the rollers in place. Drill a 1/4" hole every 12" along the length of each 4" PVC section, starting 6" from one end. These holes will accommodate the 1/4" screws that hold the rollers in place.

Step 4: Attach the Rollers to the Frame

Insert a 1/4" screw through a washer and into the first hole on one of the 4" PVC sections. Place a roller onto the screw and secure it with another washer and nut. Repeat this process for all the rollers, spacing them evenly along the 4" PVC sections. Ensure that the rollers are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the frame.

Step 5: Connect the Frame Sections

Connect the two 4" PVC frame sections using a 10" piece of 2" PVC pipe. Apply PVC primer and cement to the ends of the 2" PVC pipe and the inside of the 4" PVC sections. Insert the 2" PVC pipe into the 4" PVC sections and allow it to dry. This will create a sturdy, U-shaped frame for your lawn mower striper.

Step 6: Attach the Striper to the Mower

Attach the lawn mower striper to your mower using a bracket or U-bolt. The striper should be positioned so that the rollers are in front of the mower blades and the frame is parallel to the ground. Ensure that the striper is secure and won't wobble or shift during use.

Using Your DIY Lawn Mower Striper

To use your new lawn mower striper, simply attach it to your mower and mow your lawn as usual. The striper will create beautiful stripes as it rolls over the grass, bending the blades in one direction while the mower cuts them in the opposite direction. For the best results, mow your lawn in a pattern that alternates the direction of the stripes with each pass.

Remember to remove the striper when you're finished mowing to prevent damage to the rollers and ensure proper storage. With a little practice, you'll be creating professional-looking stripes on your lawn in no time. Happy mowing!
