Are you eager to design your dream home or office but don't know where to start? SketchUp Free is an intuitive 3D modeling software that allows you to bring your ideas to life. In this tutorial, we'll guide you through creating a basic floor plan, step by step. By the end, you'll have a solid foundation to build upon and explore SketchUp's vast potential.
Getting Started with SketchUp Free
First things first, head over to the SketchUp Free website and click on "Start Free" to launch the web-based version. Once you're in, you'll see a 3D warehouse and various tools at the bottom of your screen. Let's dive into creating your first floor plan.
Understanding the SketchUp Interface
- Orbit Tool (Orbit): Pan and zoom around your model.
- Line Tool (or): Draw lines to create shapes.
- Eraser Tool (E): Delete unwanted lines or faces.
- Move Tool (M): Move objects around your model.
- Tape Measure Tool (T): Input precise measurements.
- 2 Point Arc Tool (A): Draw arcs between two points.
- 3D Warehouse (Window > 3D Warehouse): Import free models and materials.
Creating a 2D Floor Plan
To start, click on the Architectural Design template (Window > Architecture Design). This template provides a 2D workspace perfect for creating floor plans.

Drawing the Outline of Your Room
Using the Line Tool, draw the outline of your room. To create right angles, press the Shift key while drawing. For precise measurements, use the Tape Measure Tool to input specific dimensions.
Adding Doors, Windows, and Walls
With your room outline complete, use the Line Tool to add doors, windows, and internal walls. To erase unwanted lines, use the Eraser Tool. To move objects, select the Move Tool.
Adding Details and Furniture
Now that you have the basic structure, it's time to add details and furniture. Use the 3D Warehouse to import free models. You can also use the 3D Warehouse to change your view, apply materials, and add shadows.

Creating Staircases and Upper Levels
To create staircases and upper levels, switch to the 3D Warehouse and search for "staircase" or "floor plan" models. Import them into your design and use the Move Tool to position them correctly.
Viewing Your Design in 3D
Once you're satisfied with your 2D floor plan, click on the Orbit Tool to view your design in 3D. You can also use the Orbit Tool to explore your model from different angles.
Exporting and Sharing Your Design
To export your design, click on the Share button in the top-right corner. Here, you can export your model as an image, animation, or even share it directly to social media.
Congratulations! You've just created your first floor plan using SketchUp Free. As you continue exploring the software, you'll discover endless possibilities for designing and visualizing your dream spaces.
