Autolite Shorty Header Spark Plugs
Can someone help me to figure out how to get the right shorty plug that is a close replacement for the Autolite plug? Thanks! The '4' on the end of the Autolite part number is the temp range. A "stock heat range" plug would be a 5 or 6 (higher is hotter). So 4 is a notch or two colder than stock.
I've been running the Accel shorty plugs on my 350 for the last couple of years for the extra boot clearance w/ headers. Are there any other good plugs out there that are close to the same size? Took out the autolite AR 72 today and replaced with Autolite 2974 short plugs. When I removed the plugs for cylinders 5 and 7 on the driver's side they appeared to be fouled. The autolite AR13x and AR13 series are just as short as the Accel "shorty" plugs, too.
For whatever reason, they only seem to have AR13, which is a cold projected tip, or AR13x, which are various heat ranges of non projected tip. Every car is different, which is why we offer a wide variety of spark plugs to meet the needs of every type of driver. Whether you're looking for a reliable set of replacement plugs, or looking to take engine performance to the next level, Autolite has you covered.
I was working on a friends small block Chevelle yesterday and all the plug wire boots were touching the headers. I don't know what brand the headers are but they have large tubes, the Taylor wires weren't burnt but I can see them getting burnt very soon. Autolite 23-24's= Accel 574 = short version 574S.
Basically just add the S on the end of the regular Accel part number and that will be the short version if Accel makes it. The standard NGKs that cross reference an Autolite 25 is shorter than the Autolites. I have a set of the Accel shorty plugs in mine.
They are a lot easier to put in than the normal length plugs. I had to go to them after putting on sidepipe headers. I'll look under the hood tomorrow and get the #s if you need for me to.
I advised some SBC guys to use a combo of MSD wires (shorter boots) an the AC Rapidfire spark plugs and it worked for them enough to gain header tube clearance. The Rapidfires are a good plug and will out last the ACCEl shorty's by a bunch.
