BMW 1 series first car? I am 19 and at first wanted a more `reasonable` first car. But upon further realisation i came to the conclusion that life is genuinely too short to dislike my first car, especially since i will keep this car around for a while.

I would say avoid the 116i or 118i with the 1.6 4 cyclinder petrol engine pre 2015. Every thing else is all pretty good, the manual gear box is quite notchy, most prefer the 8 speed auto. I you are looking for a car more fun & enjoyable than your Mazda it might be worth trying to push towards an in line 6 M135 or 140.

I have recently had the pleasure of owning a 118i SE 2.0 petrol automatic, which i loved - unfortunately within 2 weeks of collecting it from the dealer it became clear that there was an issue with oil consumption (2ltrs used in almost 800miles), so I returned it for a refund (the dealer offered.

Ideally petrol, and cam chain only which leads me to BMW. How are the 1 series, specifically the 116i and 118i in terms of reliability? At around 10 to 12k miles per year. I'm aiming for nice motoring with yearly service and not having constant repairs. Anybody in the BMW world able to share their experiences? UPDATE: Thanks for the comment.

Buying a used 1 series (2011-2013 model years). Advice? Hi everyone, I'm thinking of buying a new car, and the 1 series has really piqued my interest. More specifically, I am interested in a model which has the n55 engine (from what I've heard its more reliable, and I'm not looking to mod so tunability doesn't really factor in for me).

I was heavily advised to sell my 9 year old 1.0l ecoboost fiesta zetec s yesterday to avoid having to change the wet belt in a year or so, or run into any other general 'ecoboom' problems. I will happily use that as an excuse to upgrade to nicer car. I've always wanted a BMW, and I found out I could get a 116i Sport (2014/15) for around the same price with similar insurance.
