Create Your Own Space-Saving Ping Pong Table
Are you a ping pong enthusiast with limited space? A folding ping pong table is the perfect solution. Not only does it save space, but it also allows you to customize your table to your specific needs. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make your own folding ping pong table.
Gather Your Materials
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials. You'll need:
- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- 2x2 lumber (8' long)
- Hinges (4) and screws
- Latches (2) and screws
- Ping pong table net and posts
- Paint or varnish (optional)
- Tools: Saw, drill, screwdriver, tape measure, pencil
Design Your Table
First, decide on the size of your table. A standard ping pong table is 9' long, 5' wide, and 30" high. However, you can adjust these measurements to fit your space. Once you've decided on the size, sketch out your design, including the folding mechanism.

Cut the Plywood
Using your design, cut the plywood into the following pieces:
| Piece | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Top | 9' x 5' (table surface) |
| Bottom | 9' x 2' (base) |
| Sides | 2 pieces at 5' x 2.5' (table sides) |
Assemble the Base
Using the 2x4 lumber, construct the base of your table. Attach the 2x4s to the bottom piece of plywood to create a sturdy frame. Ensure the base is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.
Attach the Sides and Top
Attach the side pieces of plywood to the base using hinges. This will allow the table to fold. Next, attach the top piece of plywood to the sides using 2x2 lumber as supports. Ensure the table is level when it's in the playing position.

Add the Net and Posts
Attach the net and posts to your table according to the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the net is taut and centered.
Finish Your Table
If desired, paint or varnish your table to protect it and give it a finished look. Allow the paint or varnish to dry completely before using your table.
Enjoy Your New Table
Now that you've built your own folding ping pong table, it's time to enjoy it. Invite some friends over for a game, or use it to practice your skills. With your new table, you'll always have a place to play, no matter how limited your space.
