History of Carved Pumpkins on Halloween

Carved pumpkins have been a staple of Halloween for centuries, with roots tracing back to an Irish folktale about Stingy Jack. According to the legend, Jack, a mischievous drunkard, tricked the devil into climbing a tree and then carved a sign of the cross into it, trapping the devil until Jack promised to let him go if he'd leave Jack alone for a year and not take his soul when he died. The next year, Jack tricked the devil again, this time into turning himself into a coin to pay for their drinks. Instead of a coin, the devil turned into a silver piece, which Jack kept in his pocket next to a hot cross, causing the devil to sweat and shrivel. Jack finally let the devil go on the condition that he'd leave Jack alone for another year.

When Jack died, God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The devil, upset that Jack had tricked him and kept him from his due, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with ever since. The Irish began to refer to this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O'Lantern." In Ireland and Scotland, people began to carve turnips, beets, and potatoes with scary faces and put them in windows or near doors to ward off Stingy Jack and other evil spirits.

Choosing the Perfect Pumpkin

Selecting the right pumpkin is crucial for creating a happy Halloween carved pumpkin. Look for pumpkins with flat bottoms for stability, and consider the shape – round pumpkins are great for classic designs, while elongated ones can be perfect for more intricate or character-based carvings. Additionally, smaller pumpkins are easier to handle and can be great for detailed work, while larger ones make a bigger impact.
