Prepare Your Cabinets

First, disassemble your cabinets by removing doors, drawers, and hardware. Sand any rough edges or surfaces, and clean the cabinets thoroughly. If you plan to paint or stain your bookcases, now is the time to apply the first coat. Allow the finish to dry completely before proceeding.

Determine the Bookcase Dimensions

Measure the height, width, and depth of your cabinets. Decide how many cabinets you want to stack vertically to achieve your desired bookcase height. Ensure the total height is safe and stable for your space.

Assemble the Bookcase Frame

Using the tallest cabinets as the base, lay them on their backs. Apply wood glue along the edges where they will connect. Align the cabinets side by side, ensuring they are level and flush. Use clamps to hold them together while the glue dries. Reinforce the connection with 2-1/2" wood screws driven through the cabinet sides and into the adjacent cabinet.

Add Additional Rows (if needed)

If you're building a tall bookcase, you'll need to add more rows of cabinets. Apply glue and clamp the next set of cabinets together, just as you did with the base. Once the glue is dry, attach this row to the base using 2-1/2" screws driven through the cabinet backs and into the row below.

Measure and cut 1x12 pine boards to fit as shelves between your cabinets. Apply glue to the shelf and the cabinet sides, then nail the shelf in place using 1-1/4" brad nails. For added stability, drive a 2-1/2" screw through the shelf and into the cabinet side.

To create a solid backing for your bookcase, cut a piece of 1/4" or 1/2" plywood to fit the width and height of your bookcase. Attach it to the back using wood glue and 1-1/4" brad nails or staples.

Add Trim and Finishing Touches

For a polished look, add trim to the edges of your bookcase. Use 1x2 or 1x3 pine boards cut to fit the top, bottom, and sides. Attach them using a brad nailer or finish nails. Fill any nail holes with wood filler, sand smooth, and apply a second coat of paint or stain.

Reattach Doors and Hardware

Reattach the cabinet doors using the original hinges. If desired, replace the hardware with new knobs or pulls that match your home's decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before placing your bookcases in their final location.

Safety First: Secure Your Bookcases

Bookcases can be top-heavy and unstable, especially when filled with books. To prevent tipping, secure your bookcases to the wall using brackets or straps. This simple step can prevent accidents and ensure your beautiful, repurposed bookcases serve you well for years to come.
