Higher ranks are associated with white helmets while lower ranks have yellow helmets. In January 1976 the Central Fire Brigades Advisory Committee (CFBAC) ruled black fire helmets would give way to canary yellow while officers helmets would remain white. Rank markings for all would all be in black and they also stated that leather chin straps should replace any plastic ones still in use.

I've noticed a couple of services down south (Cambs, Devon & Somerset, see below) have FF's wearing yellow helmets with single stripes on them like the old Leading Firefighter rank would. Is anyone from/familiar with services that do this able to shed light on these FF's? Deputy Chief Fire Ocer. Firefighter: Yellow helmet - shield black for probationary, green for Level 4, yellow for Levels 3 and 2, and red for Level 1.
