When this process stalls, the grass loses its color and begins to fade to a tan or straw-like appearance.

Drought is the most frequent cause of this distressing look. Grass requires consistent moisture to maintain turgor pressure within its cells, which keeps the blades standing upright and crisp. Without adequate water, the plant goes into survival mode, slowing growth and shutting down metabolic processes, leading to dormancy that presents as straw-colored patches across the lawn.

While water is critical, the issue can also stem from a lack of essential nutrients in the soil. Nitrogen, in particular, is a key component of chlorophyll; without it, the grass cannot maintain its green pigment. Furthermore, environmental stressors such as extreme heat, compacted soil that prevents root growth, or fungal diseases can all contribute to the straw-like texture and color.
Sometimes, the culprit is not the environment but a disease. Fungal pathogens like Fusarium or Dollar Spot can invade the grass blades, disrupting the cellular structure and causing the turf to take on a bleached, straw-like appearance. Unlike drought stress, which usually affects large areas uniformly, disease often presents with irregular patterns and may include visible fungal growth or lesions on the blades.

Reviving straw-like grass requires a targeted approach based on the underlying cause. If drought is the issue, a deep and infrequent watering schedule is necessary to encourage roots to grow deeper into the soil, making the grass more resilient. However, if the problem is nutrient-deficient soil, applying a balanced fertilizer can provide the necessary building blocks for the grass to regenerate chlorophyll and return to a lush green state.

To determine the correct solution, you should perform a simple assessment: check for soil moisture several inches below the surface and look for signs of disease or pests. If the soil is dry and crumbles easily, your grass is likely thirsty.
