Before mixing a single shovel of cement, you must determine the scope of your project. Are you resurfacing an existing countertop or building one from scratch? The answers to these questions dictate whether you need a concrete overlay or a forming process that creates a thick, self-supporting slab.

The strength and appearance of your countertop depend heavily on the concrete mix you select. For a high-polish finish that mimics stone, a fine-grained mix with minimal aggregate is essential. Conversely, a robust structural mix might be necessary if you are creating a thick, standalone unit that requires maximum load-bearing capacity.

Formwork is the skeleton of your countertop. It defines the dimensions and holds the liquid concrete in place until it cures. Typically, melamine boards are used because their slick surface prevents moisture from being absorbed, resulting in a finish that requires minimal sanding.

You must also prepare the substrate you are working on. If you are pouring directly onto cabinetry, ensure the structure is level and can support the immense weight of wet concrete, which can exceed 150 pounds per square foot. Applying a release agent or building strips of waxed wood along the edges ensures the countertop will detach easily once the concrete hardens.
Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. To prevent cracking over time, especially in a horizontal surface subject to daily stress, you need to embed reinforcement mesh or Remesh into the slab. This matrix of metal distributes weight evenly and adds the tensile strength necessary for a long-lasting installation.

Pouring concrete is rarely a one-and-done task. Most quality countertops are built in layers. You start by pouring a thin base layer, vibrating the formwork aggressively to remove bubbles trapped beneath the reinforcement. Once this layer is stable, you place the mesh, followed by a second, thicker layer that builds up the mass of the slab.

For the coveted "polished concrete" look, you must wait for the slab to cure fully before beginning a multi-stage grinding process, moving from coarse diamond pads to fine abrasives until the surface shines.
Curing is the chemical process that turns concrete from a wet paste into a rock-hard solid. This phase is critical and cannot be rushed. For 48 to 72 hours, the concrete must remain moist, covered with plastic sheeting or a curing compound to prevent water from evaporating too quickly. Cracks often appear not during the mix, but during this drying phase if the environment is too dry.
Once the slab has reached its full strength, it is time for installation. Because these countertops are heavy, professional installation usually requires a second pair of hands to set the slab precisely onto the cabinets. Joints are often cut into the slab and filled with a color-matched epoxy to create the appearance of a single, seamless piece.
A concrete countertop is a living surface that will evolve over time. Unlike laminate or tile, it will develop a beautiful patina as you use it. However, it requires specific care to maintain its integrity. Because the material is porous, sealing must be reapplied annually to protect against coffee, wine, and acidic citrus spills.
