"Fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient label is a catch-all term that allows companies to hide a cocktail of potentially toxic chemicals. These undisclosed compounds can trigger allergies, migraines, asthma, and contact dermatitis. Similarly, synthetic dyes (often labeled as FD&C or D&C colors) serve no functional purpose other than aesthetics and are a common trigger for sensitive skin. Chemical exfoliants like low-strength AHAs/BHAs are generally a safer bet for texture and cell turnover.

Derived from petroleum, mineral oil, petrolatum, and liquid paraffin create an occlusive barrier that locks in moisture. However, they are also comedogenic, meaning they clog pores and trap sebum, leading to breakouts (acne cosmetica). Furthermore, there are concerns regarding the potential presence of 1,4-dioxane—a contaminant classified as a possible carcinogen—during the manufacturing process. While highly refined versions are considered safe by some regulators, many clean beauty advocates avoid them altogether. Plant-based cold-pressed oils like jojoba, squalane, or rosehip are lighter, non-comedogenic alternatives that nourish without suffocating the skin.




















Transitioning away from these ingredients requires a label-reading mindset. Start by auditing your current products and gradually replacing offenders. Remember that "organic" or "natural" labels are not foolproof; a product can be organic yet contain essential oils that irritate your skin. Focus on the order of ingredients—the first five to seven components make up the bulk of the formula.
