Hoffman persuaded BMW to hand over total control over the new car's design to Count Albrecht Goertz, a German-born industrial designer who had arrived in the U.S. in 1936, at the age of 22, and had worked under Raymond Loewy at Studebaker. His design was a knockout, its beautifully proportioned lines set off by an absolute minimum of chrome.

The press celebrated the new two-seater as the "Traum von der Isar" ("Dream from the Isar") and the "BMW Sensation" ("BMW Sensation").
