BMW introduced the M3 Evolution as a limited-production homologation model beginning in 1987 with increased power, revised bodywork, and thinner side and rear glass compared to the standard E30 M3.

This example is an Evolution II model and left the factory finished in Misano Red. The final stage of the first M3 was ignited by BMW Motorsport GmbH in 1990: the displacement was increased to 2.5 litres, resulting in 238 hp in what is now the M3 Sport Evolution, the most powerful model in BMW's E30 3 Series. The M3 Evolution II forms part of BMW's E30 model series.

Its 4 cylinder, double overhead camshaft naturally aspirated powerplant has 4 valves per cylinder and a capacity of 2.3 litres. This unit develops power and torque figures of 217 bhp (220 PS/162 kW) at 6750 rpm and 245 Nm (181 lbft/25 kgm) at 4750 rpm respectively. The E30 M3 Evolution was followed by the E30 M3 Evolution II, 500 of which were built in the Spring of 1988.
