It was Bill Auberlen in a BMW V12 LMR. He was drafting another car as they went over a rise at Road Atlanta between turns 8 and 9. As the track crested, the front end of his car lifted up and flipped over once completely due to the lack of downforce on the front end from the draft.

In our podcast, he talks to us about his beginnings in motorsport, driving the legendary V12 LMR BMW racecar, his famous back flip at Road Atlanta, and his astonishing success with Turner Motorsport. The V12 LMR, though, which was co-developed with British racing specialist Williams, showed how successfully BMW could campaign a prototype sports car before the German marque and its British racing partner focused their attention on F1 starting in 2000. In 1999, BMW took on Toyota, Mercedes, Audi, Nissan and Panoz at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its V12 LMR, securing the German constructor's first overall win at the race.

B MW's LMR prototype set the mold for every LMP to follow it. The single roll hoop and raised footbox became the bench mark as soon as the LMR debuted in 1999. BMW's modern Le Mans assault actually started off a bit inauspiciously in 1998 with the V12 LM, but lessons learned contributed to the very successful LMR.

The V12 LM was one of the first car to incorporate a raised footbox and front. The BMW V12 LMR were disadvantaged in driveability and handling compared to 1999. The set-up work proved to be extremely difficult.

But the cars managed to uphold one key strength: their reliability. BMW V12 LMR - the first BMW to win the 24-hours of le mans. This is our Closeup of one of the most successful cars in BMW motorsport history.
