Esther Mahlangu's BMW Art Car made its first appearance at three exhibitions of Art Cars in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, South Africa in late 1991. Thereafter, it traveled to Germany and then exhibited elsewhere around the world together with the balance of the Art Car collection. Since 1991, Esther Mahlangu and BMW have had a very special relationship having worked on multiple large collaborations including the BMW Art car collection, BMW Individual 7 series, Electric AI Canvas and the BMW 50th Anniversary logo.

Yet when her vibrant, geometric Ndebele designs adorned a BMW 525i in 1991, the world finally paid attention. A South African woman. However, Mahlangu has put these decorations and patterns into new contexts, including pictures, vessels, carpets and vehicles.

In 1991 Mahlangu was the first woman ever invited to create a BMW Art Car, which saw her design a 525i sedan decorated with the bright colours and geometrical shapes characteristic of Ndebele artwork. Esther Nikwambi Mahlangu was born on 11 November 1935 on a farm outside Middelburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa. She is a member of the Southern Ndebele people. [2] Mahlangu is the eldest of nine children, with six brothers and two sisters.

She began painting at the age of 10, having been taught by her mother and grandmother in accordance with Ndebele tradition, in which adolescent girls learn to. South African artist Esther Mahlangu and BMW team up at Frieze LA 2024 for the cutting. Esther Mahlangu's now, for the second time, joined forces with BMW Individual Manufaktur, Mahlangu transformed a luxury Sedan into a dynamic work of art by painting her characteristic motifs on the real wood interior trims.

To facilitate the creative process specialists at BMW Individual Manufaktur oversaw the full manufacturing process. In 1991, Esther Mahlangu was selected to paint the 12th Art Car for the collection, making her the first female and first African artist to join the program. Since 1975, artists worldwide have been invited to turn BMW automobiles into works of art signifying a particular period of time.
