Unlike a fresh log dragged from a termite-ridden forest floor, properly sourced and prepared driftwood has a very low risk of harboring these pests. The key lies in understanding the journey the wood takes from its source to your home and the biological differences between marine and terrestrial pests.

The Origins of Driftwood
To assess the risk, it is essential to understand where driftwood comes from. True driftwood is wood that has been washed out to sea or deposited on shorelines by rivers and oceans. This extended saltwater exposure creates a very different environment compared to wood found in a forest.

Marine environments are largely inhospitable to termites. These insects thrive in warm, humid, oxygen-rich terrestrial ecosystems where they can feed on cellulose. The salt content of the ocean, combined with the physical abrasion of waves and the lack of stable nesting grounds, effectively eliminates termite colonies from living on or in driftwood that has been floating for extended periods. While you might find tiny marine borers or shipworms, you will not find the subterranean social insects known as termites.
Risks from Improper SourcingWhile true ocean driftwood is generally safe, the risk emerges when the definition of "driftwood" is expanded. Some sellers market wood that has merely been soaked or power-washed and then labeled as "driftwood" for decorative purposes.
