The story behind cop cars isn't so black and white Police agencies famously work on tight budgets, especially when it comes to their cars. A century ago, most cars were finished off with cheap black paint. To distinguish cop cars from the general populace, it was decided to add some white to set them apart.

Across different countries in the world, police cars have distinct colors that civilians in these countries can easily recognize. The only police cars you may not recognize are unmarked cars, and that's exactly the purpose of such cop cars-stealth.

In this article, we'll be looking at the colors of police cars in the United States and select countries across the globe and how to spot them. Police agencies work on tight vehicle budgets, and most new cars a century ago were factory-finished with cheap japan black paint (famously on Ford's Model T). The contrasting black-and-white paint scheme was used to make police vehicles easily stand out from civilian vehicles without requiring bright paint colors, custom designs, graphics, or larger markings.

The colors of NYPD vehicles are usually an all-white body with two blue stripes along each side. The word "POLICE" is printed in small text above the front wheel wells, and as "NYPD Police" above the front grille. The NYPD patch is emblazoned on both sides, either on or just forward of the front doors.

The letters "NYPD" are printed in blue Rockwell Extra Bold italic font on the front doors. State Police are either blue and yellow or my personal favorite black and gold. Local sheriff's department is white and goldish, and local city is black and gold.

The Pennsylvania State Police patrol fleet is going back to the traditional white color scheme that had been in place prior to 2017. BETHLEHEM, Pa. (a) White patrol cars which have a green stripe running horizontally along the upper portion of each side may be used exclusively for county sheriffs' patrol cars, and this color scheme shall not be used by any other law enforcement official or agency.

When adopted for use by a county sheriff's department, the stripe design as well as other emblems and lettering shall conform to the official.
