Craft Your Perfect Space: Build Your Own Bar Height Table
Elevate your home's style and functionality with a custom-built bar height table. Not only is this a rewarding DIY project, but it's also a cost-effective way to add a unique touch to your space. Let's dive into the step-by-step process of creating your own bar height table, perfect for entertaining, working, or simply enjoying a good book.
Understanding Bar Height Tables
Before we start building, let's understand what makes a table 'bar height'. Typically, bar height tables stand at about 42 inches (107 cm) tall, which is ideal for use with bar stools. This height is perfect for creating a versatile space that can transition from a dining area to a cozy bar or workspace.
Materials Needed
- Plywood (3/4" thick, cut to desired tabletop size)
- 2x4 lumber (for table legs and apron)
- Wood glue
- Screws (2-1/2" and 1-1/4")
- Wood filler
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Table saw, miter saw, or circular saw
- Drill and driver bits
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Designing Your Table
First, decide on the size and shape of your tabletop. Popular choices include rectangular, square, or round tops. For a bar height table, aim for a tabletop that's about 36-42 inches wide and 60-72 inches long. Once you've decided on the size, cut your plywood to match.

Building the Legs and Apron
The legs and apron (the frame that connects the legs) will support your tabletop. Cut four 2x4s to your desired table height for the legs. Then, cut two more 2x4s to the width of your tabletop for the apron. Assemble the legs and apron using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws, creating a rectangular frame.
Attaching the Legs
To attach the legs to the apron, mark the center point of each leg and apron piece. Drill a pilot hole through the apron and into the leg, then secure them together using 2-1/2" screws. Repeat this process for all four legs.
Attaching the Tabletop
With the legs and apron assembled, it's time to attach the tabletop. Apply wood glue to the top of the apron, then carefully place the tabletop onto the frame. Use clamps to secure the tabletop in place while the glue dries. Once dry, reinforce the bond with 1-1/4" screws driven up through the apron and into the tabletop.

Finishing Touches
After the table is assembled, fill any holes or gaps with wood filler. Allow the filler to dry, then sand the entire table lightly with 120-grit sandpaper. For a smooth finish, follow up with 220-grit sandpaper. If desired, stain or paint your table to achieve your desired look. Finally, apply a protective sealant to preserve your table's finish.
Enjoy Your Custom Bar Height Table
With your new bar height table complete, it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Invite friends over for a drink, set up a cozy workspace, or simply appreciate the unique addition to your home. Building your own furniture not only saves you money but also allows you to express your creativity and personal style.
