Elevate Your Space: A Simple DIY End Table Tutorial
Adding a touch of personal style to your home doesn't always require a hefty budget. With a bit of creativity and some basic woodworking skills, you can create a unique and functional DIY end table that perfectly complements your space. In this step-by-step guide, we'll walk you through a simple yet stylish end table project that's perfect for beginners.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. For this simple end table, you'll need:
- 2x4 lumber (about 8 feet)
- 1x2 lumber (about 6 feet)
- Wood glue
- 1.25-inch pocket hole screws
- 1.5-inch wood screws
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Polyurethane
- Clamps
- Drill
- Jigsaw
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Safety glasses
Design and Measure
First, decide on the dimensions of your end table. For this tutorial, we'll create a table that's 16 inches wide, 18 inches long, and 24 inches tall. Using a measuring tape and pencil, mark the cuts on your lumber pieces according to the following measurements:

| Piece | Cut Length |
|---|---|
| Legs (4 pieces) | 24 inches |
| Top (2 pieces) | 16 inches |
| Top (2 pieces) | 18 inches |
| Shelf (optional, 2 pieces) | 14.5 inches |
| Shelf support (4 pieces) | 16 inches |
Cut and Prepare the Pieces
Using a jigsaw, cut the lumber pieces according to the measurements. Ensure you wear safety glasses during this process. Once cut, sand the edges and surfaces of each piece using 120-grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots and prepare them for assembly.
Assemble the Legs
To create the table's legs, you'll need to attach two 2x4 pieces together at a 90-degree angle. To do this, use a pocket hole jig to create a pocket hole on one end of each 2x4 piece. Then, apply wood glue to the edges of the pieces and clamp them together. Using 1.25-inch pocket hole screws, secure the pieces together. Repeat this process to create the remaining three legs.
Attach the Legs to the Top
Next, attach the legs to the table top. First, lay out the two 16-inch top pieces parallel to each other, with a 16-inch gap between them. Then, place the two 18-inch top pieces perpendicular to the 16-inch pieces, creating a rectangular frame. Apply wood glue to the inside corners of the frame and use 1.5-inch wood screws to secure the pieces together.

Now, attach the legs to the frame. Measure and mark the center point of each leg, then attach the legs to the inside corners of the frame using wood screws. Ensure the legs are perpendicular to the frame and the table top is level.
Add a Shelf (Optional)
If you'd like to add a shelf to your end table, cut two 1x2 pieces to create the shelf support. Attach these pieces to the inside of the legs, about 8 inches from the table top, using wood screws. Then, attach the 14.5-inch shelf pieces to the shelf supports using wood screws.
Finishing Touches
Once your end table is assembled, sand the entire piece using 220-grit sandpaper to ensure a smooth finish. If desired, stain or paint the table to match your decor. Finally, apply a coat of polyurethane to protect the table and give it a glossy finish.
Allow the polyurethane to dry completely before placing items on your new DIY end table. Enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you've created a functional and stylish piece of furniture with your own hands!
