Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. Here's a list to help you prepare:
- 2x4 lumber (for the tabletop and legs)

- 2.5" pocket hole screws
- 1.25" pocket hole screws
- 2" wood screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Polyurethane
- Pocket hole jig (like Kreg Jig)
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Orbital sander
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Clamps
Design Your Table
First, decide on the size and shape of your table. A standard farmhouse table is around 72" long and 36" wide, with a 30" height. Sketch your design, including the tabletop, legs, and aprons (the sides and ends of the table).
Build the Tabletop
The tabletop is the centerpiece of your farmhouse table. Here's how to create a simple, sturdy top using 2x4 boards:
- Cut four 2x4 boards to your desired table length. These will be the top and bottom of your tabletop.
- Cut four more 2x4 boards to the width of your table minus 1.5". These will be the sides of your tabletop.
- Using a pocket hole jig, drill pocket holes on the inside of the side boards, about 1" from the top.
- Apply wood glue to the edges of the side boards and attach them to the top and bottom boards using 2.5" pocket hole screws.
- Clamp the tabletop together and let the glue dry.
- Sand the tabletop smooth with 120-grit sandpaper.
Create the Legs and Aprons
Next, let's build the legs and aprons that will support your tabletop.
- Cut four 2x4 boards to your desired leg height. You can angle the legs for a more rustic look, or keep them straight for a cleaner style.
- Cut four 2x2 boards to the width of your table minus 1.5". These will be the aprons that connect the legs.
- Using a pocket hole jig, drill pocket holes on the inside of the aprons, about 1" from the top and bottom.
- Attach the aprons to the legs using 2" wood screws, creating two 'U' shaped pieces.
- Attach the leg and apron assemblies to the tabletop using 2.5" pocket hole screws.
Sand, Stain, and Seal
Now that your table is assembled, it's time to make it look beautiful!
- Sand the entire table with 120-grit sandpaper, then follow up with 220-grit for a smooth finish.
- If desired, apply your chosen stain or paint, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to dry completely.
- Apply a coat of polyurethane to protect your table and give it a nice sheen. Allow it to dry, then lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper and apply a second coat.
