Transform your outdoor living area into a functional and stylish oasis with a DIY outdoor side table featuring built-in storage. This project is perfect for avid DIYers looking to add a touch of personalization to their patio, balcony, or garden. With a few simple tools and some basic woodworking skills, you can create a statement piece that's both practical and beautiful.
Why Choose a DIY Outdoor Side Table?
Investing in a DIY outdoor side table offers numerous benefits. Design and Dimensions
For this DIY project, we'll create a simple yet elegant outdoor side table with a 16" x 16" top, 18" height, and 12" x 12" storage shelf. You can adjust these dimensions to suit your specific needs and space requirements.

Table Top
To create the table top, cut two pieces of 1x6 lumber to 16" in length. Apply exterior wood glue along the edges of one board and attach the second board on top, creating a 3" thick top. Secure the boards together using 2.5-inch screws driven through pilot holes. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding.
Legs and Apron
Cut four 18" long legs from 2x4 lumber. To create the apron, cut two pieces of 1x6 lumber to 15.5" in length and two pieces to 16" in length. Attach the apron pieces to the legs using 2.5-inch screws, creating a rectangle frame. Ensure the 15.5" pieces are on the inside to create a 0.5" overhang on all sides.
Storage Shelf
Cut four pieces of 1x8 lumber to 12" in length for the shelf frame. Assemble the frame using 1.25-inch screws, ensuring the corners are square. Cut two pieces of 1x8 lumber to 11.5" in length and attach them to the top of the shelf frame using 1.25-inch screws, creating a 0.5" overhang on all sides.

Assembly
Attach the table top to the leg and apron assembly using 2.5-inch screws driven through pilot holes. Position the storage shelf 6" above the bottom of the table, and attach it to the legs using 2.5-inch screws. Allow the glue to dry completely before proceeding with finishing.
Finishing Touches
Sand the table lightly with 120-grit sandpaper to prepare it for painting or staining. Apply your chosen exterior finish, allowing it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. For added protection, apply a second coat and allow it to dry completely.
Your DIY outdoor side table with storage is now ready to be placed in your outdoor living space. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and the added functionality it brings to your patio, balcony, or garden.
