Build a Stylish Table with Shelf: A Step-by-Step Guide
Elevate your storage game with a DIY table featuring a built-in shelf. This versatile piece of furniture not only adds functionality but also enhances the aesthetics of your space. Let's dive into a comprehensive guide on how to build a table with a shelf, perfect for both beginners and experienced woodworkers.
Materials Needed
- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- 2x4 lumber (8' long)
- Wood glue
- 1-1/4" pocket hole screws
- 1-1/4" wood screws
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
Tools Required
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Circular saw
- Drill with driver bits
- Pocket hole jig (like Kreg Jig)
- Clamps
- Orbital sander
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Design and Measure
First, decide on the dimensions of your table. For this guide, we'll create a table that's 48" long, 24" wide, and 30" tall, with a shelf that's 12" deep. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark out these dimensions on your plywood sheet.
Step 2: Cut the Pieces
Using a circular saw, cut out the following pieces from your plywood sheet:

| Piece | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Table top | 48" x 24" |
| Table apron (4 pieces) | 24" x 3" (2 pieces), 12" x 3" (2 pieces) |
| Shelf (2 pieces) | 48" x 12" |
| Legs (4 pieces) | 28" x 3" (2 pieces), 12" x 3" (2 pieces) |
Cut four 2x4s into the following lengths for the table's frame and shelf supports:
- 2 pieces at 46" for the table's length
- 2 pieces at 22" for the table's width
- 2 pieces at 11" for the shelf supports
Step 3: Assemble the Table Frame
Using a pocket hole jig, drill pocket holes into the inner sides of the 24" table apron pieces and the 28" legs. Attach these pieces together using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws to form the table's frame. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner and adjusting as needed.
Step 4: Attach the Table Top
Center the table top onto the frame and attach it using 1-1/4" wood screws driven up from the bottom. Ensure the top is flush with the outer edges of the frame.

Step 5: Build the Shelf
Attach the 11" shelf supports to the underside of the 48" shelf pieces using 1-1/4" wood screws. Space them evenly, about 12" apart. Place the two shelf pieces together, ensuring they're flush at the front and back, and attach them using wood glue and 1-1/4" wood screws driven from the top into the supports.
Step 6: Attach the Shelf to the Table
Center the shelf onto the table frame and attach it using 1-1/4" wood screws driven up from the bottom. Ensure the shelf is flush with the outer edges of the table apron.
Step 7: Sand and Finish
Sand the entire table with 120-grit sandpaper, followed by 220-grit for a smooth finish. Apply your chosen stain or paint, allowing it to dry completely before using the table.
Congratulations! You've just built a stylish table with a shelf that's both functional and beautiful. Enjoy your new furniture piece and the satisfaction of a job well done.
