Crafting the Perfect End Table: A Step-by-Step Guide
Elevate your space with a custom end table, tailored to your style and needs. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process, from planning to finish, ensuring a professional result that's uniquely yours.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you begin, assemble your materials and tools. For this project, you'll need:
- 2x4 lumber (quantity depends on table size)
- 1x6 lumber for the tabletop
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Sandpaper (120 and 220 grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Polyurethane

Design Your End Table
First, decide on the size and style of your end table. A standard end table is about 16" to 20" wide, 16" to 20" deep, and 24" to 30" tall. Sketch your design, including the tabletop, legs, and any decorative elements.
Cut Your Lumber
Using your design as a guide, cut your lumber to size. For a simple end table, you'll need:
- Four legs (2x4s, 16" to 20" long)
- Two aprons (2x4s, 14" to 18" long)
- Two stretchers (2x4s, 12" to 16" long)
- One tabletop (1x6, cut to your desired width and length)
Assemble the Legs and Aprons

Attach the Tabletop
Center the tabletop on the frame and attach it using wood glue and 2-1/2" screws. Ensure the tabletop overhangs the frame evenly on all sides. Clamp the tabletop while the glue dries.
Sand and Finish
Once the glue is dry, sand the end table thoroughly, starting with 120 grit sandpaper and finishing with 220 grit. Remove any dust, then apply your chosen stain or paint. Allow it to dry, then apply a coat of polyurethane for protection.
Optional: Add Decorative Edges
For a decorative touch, use a jigsaw to cut a design into the edges of the tabletop and aprons. Sand any rough edges smooth before finishing.
