Create Your Own Pool Table: A Step-by-Step Guide
Transform your game room into a personal billiard hall with this comprehensive guide on how to make a pool table at home. With a bit of planning, some basic tools, and a weekend's worth of effort, you'll be sinking stripes and solids in no time. Let's dive into the process, ensuring it's as easy and enjoyable as a perfect break shot.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. Here's a list to help you prepare:
- Plywood (3/4" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- MDF or particle board (1/2" thick, 4' x 8' sheet)
- Pool table felt (standard size: 7' x 4' for an 8' table)
- Pool table rubber (cushion) and glue
- Pool table pockets and hardware
- Wood glue
- Screws and pocket hole screws
- Wood clamps
- Circular saw or jigsaw
- Drill and driver bits
- Orbital sander and sandpaper (120-grit)
- Vacuum cleaner
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Level
Design and Measure Your Table
First, decide on the size of your pool table. Standard sizes are 7', 8', or 9' in length. For this guide, we'll focus on an 8' table. Using a tape measure and pencil, mark out the following dimensions on your plywood and MDF sheets:

- Tabletop: 44" x 92" (plywood)
- Apron (surrounding the tabletop): 2" x 92" (MDF) and 2" x 44" (MDF)
- Legs: 2" x 2" x 30" (4 pieces, MDF)
- Rails (supporting the tabletop): 2" x 4" x 44" (2 pieces, MDF)
- Pocket supports: 2" x 4" x 6" (6 pieces, MDF)
Cut and Assemble the Table Base
Using your circular saw or jigsaw, cut along the marked lines. Once all pieces are cut, it's time to assemble the table base:
- Attach the apron pieces to the tabletop using wood glue and pocket hole screws. Ensure the tabletop is level and square during assembly.
- Attach the legs to the apron using wood glue and screws. Make sure the table is level and stable.
- Attach the rails to the inside of the apron, connecting the two long sides.
- Attach the pocket supports to the inside of the apron, evenly spaced along the long sides.
Install the Cushion and Pockets
Before installing the cushion, ensure your table base is perfectly square and level. Then, follow these steps:
- Measure and cut the pool table rubber to fit around the inside of the apron, leaving space for the pockets.
- Glue the rubber to the apron, using clamps to hold it in place until dry.
- Install the pockets and hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Apply the Felt
Before applying the felt, lightly sand the tabletop and vacuum any dust. Then, follow these steps:

- Unroll the felt, ensuring it's face down and wrinkle-free.
- Starting from one corner, carefully fold the felt over the tabletop, smoothing it out as you go.
- Use weights or clamps to hold the felt in place while you work on the other corners.
- Once the felt is smooth and taut, trim any excess material, leaving about 1/2" of overhang.
- Secure the felt to the underside of the tabletop using staples or tacks, pulling it taut as you go.
Finishing Touches
With the felt applied, your homemade pool table is almost complete. To give it a professional finish, consider the following:
- Stain or paint the table to match your room's decor.
- Apply a clear sealant to protect the felt and give it a smooth, professional look.
- Install a set of pool table lights to ensure optimal gameplay.
Congratulations! You've now created a stunning, functional pool table that's perfect for hours of entertainment. Invite your friends over, rack 'em up, and enjoy your new favorite pastime. Happy rolling!
