Elevate Your Space: A Simple DIY End Table Tutorial
Looking to add a touch of personal charm to your living room or bedroom? A simple DIY end table might just be the perfect project for you. Not only is it a budget-friendly way to spruce up your space, but it's also an opportunity to showcase your creativity and DIY skills. Let's dive into a step-by-step guide to create a stylish and functional end table that will complement your home beautifully.
Gather Your Materials and Tools
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools at hand. Here's a list to help you get started:
- Plywood (1/2" thick, cut to your desired dimensions - we recommend 16" x 16" for a sturdy, compact table)
- 2x2 lumber (for the legs and apron)
- Wood glue
- Screws (1-1/4" and 2-1/2")
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional, for finishing)
- Clamps
- Drill and driver bits
- Saw (circular saw, miter saw, or handsaw)
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Design and Measure
First, decide on the size and style of your end table. For a simple, versatile design, we'll create a table with a 16" x 16" top and 16" x 16" base. The legs will be 16" tall, making the overall height of the table 18". You can adjust these measurements to suit your needs.

Using your tape measure and pencil, mark the dimensions on your plywood and 2x2 lumber. Cut the pieces according to your measurements:
- Plywood top: 16" x 16"
- 2x2 legs: 4 pieces at 16" long
- 2x2 apron: 4 pieces at 15" long (to accommodate the thickness of the legs)
Assemble the Legs
Begin by attaching the legs to the apron pieces. Apply wood glue to the ends of the apron pieces, then clamp the legs in place, ensuring they're flush with the top and bottom of the apron. Use 1-1/4" screws to secure the legs, driving them in from the inside of the apron for a clean look.
Attach the Apron to the Top
Once the glue has dried and the screws are secure, attach the apron and legs assembly to the plywood top. Apply wood glue to the top edges of the apron, then position the assembly onto the underside of the plywood top. Clamp the pieces together and use 2-1/2" screws to attach the apron to the top, driving the screws in from the inside of the apron.

Sand and Finish
Now that your end table is assembled, it's time to sand and finish it to your liking. Start with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or surfaces, then follow up with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth, professional finish. Wipe away any dust with a damp cloth, then apply your chosen stain or paint. Allow the finish to dry completely before placing any items on your new end table.
Placement and Styling
With your simple DIY end table complete, it's time to find the perfect spot for it in your home. Place it next to your favorite chair, sofa, or bed, and top it with a lamp, books, or decorative items that reflect your personal style. Enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you've created a functional and stylish piece that adds warmth and charm to your space.
