Crafting Classic Pub Tables: A Simple Woodworking Guide
Pub tables are not just furniture; they're a gathering place, a centerpiece of camaraderie and conversation. Creating one for your home or workshop is a rewarding woodworking project that combines functionality and charm. Here's a simple, step-by-step guide to help you build a classic pub table using basic woodworking techniques.
Materials and Tools Needed
Before you start, gather your materials and tools:
- 2x4 lumber for the base (about 8 feet)
- 2x6 lumber for the top (about 6 feet)
- 1.5" and 2.5" pocket hole screws
- Wood glue
- Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Circular saw
- Drill with driver bits
- Pocket hole jig (like the Kreg Jig)
- Clamps
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Designing Your Pub Table
First, decide on the size of your pub table. A common size is 40" wide, 24" deep, and 36" tall. You can adjust these measurements to fit your space and needs. Sketch a simple plan or use online tools to visualize your design.
Building the Base
The base of your pub table will be a simple, sturdy frame. Here's how to build it:
- Cut four legs from the 2x4 lumber, each 16" long.
- Cut two aprons (horizontal supports) from the 2x4 lumber, each 12" long.
- Using a pocket hole jig, drill two pocket holes on the inside of each apron.
- Attach the aprons to the legs using 1.5" pocket hole screws, creating a rectangular frame. Ensure the frame is square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner; adjust as needed.
Creating the Tabletop
The tabletop is the star of the show, so take your time with this step:
- Cut the tabletop from the 2x6 lumber. You'll need two pieces, each 20" wide and 40" long.
- Lay the pieces side by side, ensuring they're flush at the ends. Clamp them together.
- Drill pocket holes along both long edges of the top piece, about 1" from the edge.
- Apply wood glue along the edges of the bottom piece.
- Align the pieces and attach them using 2.5" pocket hole screws.
- Let the glue dry, then remove the clamps.
Attaching the Tabletop
Now it's time to attach the tabletop to the base:
- Center the base on the underside of the tabletop.
- Drill pilot holes through the aprons and into the tabletop.
- Attach the base to the tabletop using 2.5" screws.
Finishing Touches
Your pub table is almost complete. Now it's time to make it look great:
- Sand the table thoroughly, starting with 120-grit sandpaper and finishing with 220-grit.
- Apply your chosen stain or paint, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to dry completely.
- Protect your table with a clear sealant, like polyurethane or varnish.
