Create Your Own Simple Table: A DIY Guide

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Legs
Start by measuring and cutting the legs of your table. For a simple table, you can make the legs 16" long. Cut four pieces of 2x4 lumber to this length using a circular saw or handsaw.
Step 2: Create the Apron
The apron is the frame that connects the legs and supports the tabletop. Cut four pieces of 2x4 lumber to 16" for the long apron pieces and two pieces to 12" for the short apron pieces.
Step 3: Assemble the Legs and Apron
Using a pocket hole jig, drill two pocket holes on the inside of each long apron piece. Then, attach the apron pieces to the legs using 1-1/4" pocket hole screws. Ensure the legs are square and the apron is flush with the top of the legs.
Step 4: Cut the Tabletop
Measure and cut the 1x8 lumber to the desired length for your tabletop. For a simple table, you can make the tabletop 36" long. You'll need two pieces of 1x8 lumber for a 36" tabletop.
Step 5: Attach the Tabletop
Lay the assembled legs and apron on a flat surface. Apply wood glue to the top of the apron. Carefully place the tabletop onto the apron, ensuring it's centered and flush with the edges of the apron. Use clamps to secure the tabletop in place while the glue dries.
Step 6: Sand and Finish
Once the glue is dry, remove the clamps and sand the table using 120-grit sandpaper. Remove any dust with a damp cloth. If desired, apply stain or paint to the table using a paintbrush or foam roller. Allow the stain or paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Finally, apply a coat of polyurethane to protect the table and give it a finished look.
