From Pilgrims to Slasher Victims: Thanksgiving Dinner in Horror Movies
Thanksgiving, a time for family, feasting, and giving thanks, has been a staple in American culture since the 17th century. However, in the realm of horror movies, this cherished tradition often takes a dark and gruesome turn. Let's delve into the world of Thanksgiving dinner horror, exploring the tropes, films, and the chilling atmosphere these movies create.
Why Thanksgiving Dinner in Horror?
Thanksgiving dinner in horror movies serves as a stark contrast to the holiday's traditional warmth and comfort. It's a familiar setting that filmmakers exploit to create a sense of unease and betrayal. Here are a few reasons why this trope works so well:
- Familiarity Breeds Contempt: We're all familiar with the Thanksgiving dinner ritual, making it a perfect setting for horror. The comfort we associate with it is twisted into something sinister.
- Isolation: Thanksgiving often involves traveling to a remote location to be with family. This isolation can amplify the tension and fear when something goes awry.
- Family Dysfunction: Thanksgiving dinner can bring out the best and worst in families. Horror movies capitalize on this, using family dynamics as a catalyst for chaos and violence.
Iconic Thanksgiving Dinner Horror Movies
Several horror films have used Thanksgiving dinner as a central plot device. Here are a few standout examples:
| Movie Title | Year | Brief Synopsis |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving (1980) | 1980 | A maniacal killer, dressed as a pilgrim, terrorizes a family during their Thanksgiving dinner. |
| Black Thanksgiving (2007) | 2007 | A group of friends, stuck in a remote cabin, are picked off one by one by a mysterious killer during their Thanksgiving celebration. |
| ThanksKilling (2009) | 2009 | A turkey puppet, possessed by an ancient demon, wreaks havoc on a group of friends during their Thanksgiving dinner. |
Thanksgiving Dinner Horror Tropes
Certain tropes have become synonymous with Thanksgiving dinner horror:
- The Uninvited Guest: A stranger or unexpected family member arrives, disrupting the dinner and bringing chaos with them.
- The Family Secret: A long-buried family secret is revealed, often with deadly consequences.
- The Killer in Plain Sight: The killer is often someone the family knows and trusts, adding an extra layer of tension and betrayal.
Conclusion
Thanksgiving dinner horror movies offer a unique blend of familiarity and fear, using our cherished traditions to create chilling and unforgettable experiences. Whether you're a fan of slasher films, psychological horror, or comedic horror, there's a Thanksgiving dinner horror movie out there for you. Just remember, next time you sit down for your Thanksgiving feast, keep an eye on that suspicious-looking uncle - he might just be the main course.
