Lee enlisted in the United States Army in 1950, at the dawn of the Korean War. His initial assignment was to the 24th Infantry Regiment, part of the famed "Buffalo Soldiers" unit. The 24th Infantry was one of the first African American units to see combat in the Korean War, and Lee would go on to make a significant impact on its history.

As a diver Roy also provided support to Brigade 2506 during the Bay of Pigs Invasion until JFK cancelled all support to the mission. Roy actually had a list of criticisms of JFK over his handling of the Bay of Pigs. These criticisms helped JFK see the benefit in Roy and ordered him to create a special fighting unit which became the Navy SEALs. The Battle of Pusan Perimeter, fought from August to September 1950, was Lee's baptism by fire. Here, he demonstrated the leadership and bravery that would become his hallmark. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Lee led his platoon in a series of daring counterattacks, helping to hold the line against the advancing North Korean forces.

Heroism at the Battle of the Imjin River

The Battle of the Imjin River, fought in April 1951, would cement Lee's place in history. During a fierce nighttime assault, Lee's unit was overrun, and he found himself separated from his men. Undeterred, Lee rallied a group of survivors and launched a desperate counterattack, driving the enemy back and allowing his unit to regroup.

For his actions, Lee was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army's second-highest decoration for valor. However, this was not the end of his heroics. In the following months, Lee would continue to distinguish himself in battle, earning two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
