Discovering Installed Software on Your Mac
Are you curious about the software currently installed on your Mac? Whether you're troubleshooting, managing disk space, or simply curious, finding out what's on your system is a straightforward process. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to do just that.
Using the Applications Folder
The most intuitive way to find installed software on your Mac is by checking the Applications folder. This folder contains all the apps you've downloaded and installed from the App Store, as well as those you've manually downloaded from the internet.
To access the Applications folder:

- Open Finder.
- In the sidebar, under 'Locations', click on 'Applications'.
- Here, you'll find a list of all your installed apps.
Checking Launchpad
MacOS also provides a visual interface for managing your apps called Launchpad. It's a full-screen display of all your apps, organized into pages.
To access Launchpad:
- Click the Launchpad icon in your Dock, or press F4 on your keyboard.
- Scroll through the pages to see all your installed apps.
Using the System Information Tool
For a more detailed list of installed software, including background apps and those installed via Homebrew or other package managers, you can use the System Information tool.

To access System Information:
- Open Spotlight Search by pressing Command + Space.
- Type 'System Information' and press Enter.
- In the left sidebar, click on 'Software'. Here, you'll find a list of all installed software, along with their versions and install dates.
Managing Disk Space
If you're looking to free up disk space, you can use the 'Storage Management' tool to see which apps are taking up the most space. This tool also allows you to delete unnecessary files and optimize storage.
To access Storage Management:
- Open the Apple menu and select 'About This Mac'.
- Click on 'Storage'.
- Here, you'll see a breakdown of how your disk space is being used. Click on 'Manage...' to open the Storage Management tool.
Uninstalling Software
Once you've identified the software installed on your Mac, you might want to uninstall some of it. The process varies depending on the app, but generally, you can drag the app to the Trash, then empty the Trash to remove it completely.
However, some apps leave behind preference files or other data that can't be removed this way. For these, you might need to use a dedicated uninstaller tool.
Keeping Your Mac Software Up-to-Date
Regularly updating your software is crucial for maintaining your Mac's performance and security. MacOS includes a built-in tool for updating your software.
To check for updates:
- Open the Apple menu and select 'System Preferences'.
- Click on 'Software Update'.
- Here, you can see a list of available updates and choose which ones to install.
