One was not keeping proper time, and the other one stopped. A very high percentage of bathroom fans are shaded pole motors, which are all under 1HP, and more importantly, shaded pole motors have 'nice' operating characteristics when it comes to switch hardware. Given what you're suggesting about the switch rating (1HP), the timer switch should be fine.

Your bathroom fan appears to run of a standard decora style (big flat paddle) switch. If you want to have your bathroom fan (which appears to be just a bog standard one) run on a timer you can get a repalcement timer from HD like this one.
