Measuring your bathroom sink faucet for replacement is a foundational skill that saves time, money, and frustration. A precise measurement ensures the new fixture fits perfectly, functions as intended, and complements the existing layout. Whether you are upgrading for style or fixing a leak, understanding the specific dimensions and configurations of your current setup is the first critical step.
Identify Your Faucet Configuration
Before grabbing a tape measure, you must determine the physical setup of your current system. This initial assessment dictates which measurements are relevant and what type of replacement is viable. There are three primary configurations to identify.
Center-Set Faucets
This style features a single, central handle or lever mounted on a bridge. The holes in the sink's deck are usually spaced 4 inches apart, measured from the center of one hole to the center of the other. This is the most common configuration found in modern bathrooms.

Spread-Set or Bridge Faucets
Similar to center-set, this type uses a bridge connecting the handles. However, the hole spacing is typically wider, often ranging from 8 to 16 inches. The measurement is taken center-to-center between the two handle holes.
Single-Handle or Widespread Faucets
Widespread models feature three distinct holes. The outer holes are usually 8 to 16 inches apart, while the center handle sits above the drain. If you have three holes, you must measure the distance between the left and right outer holes to ensure compatibility.
Measure the Mounting Style
The method by which the faucet attaches to the sink is just as important as the hole spacing. Selecting a replacement with a different mounting style will render it incompatible, regardless of other dimensions.

- Top-Mount (Deck-Mount): The base of the faucet sits on top of the sink deck, secured by a large nut underneath. This is the most common style for porcelain and ceramic sinks.
- Bottom-Mount (Undermount): The mounting hardware is located below the sink surface, creating a seamless, smooth deck. These are common in high-end stone sinks.
- Wall-Mount: The entire fixture is suspended from the wall behind the sink. This style requires no holes in the deck but necessitates specific plumbing rough-in dimensions.
Critical Dimensional Measurements
To ensure the replacement faucet functions correctly, you must verify two specific heights and reach distances. These measurements prevent the unit from sitting too low or too high, avoiding splashing issues or awkward handling.
Mounting Height
Measure from the center of the drain to the top of the deck. Standard faucets usually require 1.125 to 1.375 inches of the shaft to fit securely under the nut. Tall vessel sinks require specialty tall-body faucets, so this dimension is crucial to avoid a unit that sits awkwardly low.
Spout Reach and Height
Measure the distance from the center of the drain to the base of the faucet handle or spout body (spout reach). Additionally, measure the vertical distance from the deck to the top of the spout when it is in the "off" position (spout height). You need sufficient spout reach to clear the basin's rim, and adequate height to fill containers without the spout scraping the sink.

Handle Operation and Clearance
Functionality is just as vital as fit. You must ensure adequate physical room for the handles or controls to operate without collision.
Check the space directly beside the drain. Swing the handles or move the lever to their maximum operating position. The handles must not collide with the sink's rim, the countertop edge, or any other fixtures like soap dispensers. A faucet that cannot move freely is a major design flaw, regardless of its aesthetic appeal.
Review the Supply Line Configuration
Finally, inspect the plumbing connection behind the fixture. The new faucet must align with the existing supply valves.
Check the distance between the two hot and cold water supply holes on the underside of the new faucet. This center-to-center dimension must match the spacing of the valves coming out of the wall or floor. Furthermore, verify that the length of the flexible supply lines included or required are sufficient to reach the valves comfortably without being stretched tight.
