Ignoring any of these steps compromises the entire assembly, leading to sagging, mold, or tile cracking over time.
Ensuring Structural Support and Slope
Before any materials touch the subfloor, verify that the framing is robust enough to handle the weight of tile, water, and a person. The joists must be spaced correctly, typically 16 inches on center, and reinforced to create a slight pitch toward the drain. This slope is non-negotiable; it guides water away from the standing area and into the waste system. Use a long level or a specialized framing square to calculate the angle, ensuring it meets the manufacturer’s specifications for the specific base you are installing.

The Critical Role of Backer Board
Standard drywall is unsuitable for a wet area, which is why cement backer board is the industry standard. This rigid sheet material provides a stable surface that does not rot, shrink, or bend. When applying these materials, pay close attention to the transitions where the walls meet the floor and the corners of the shower pan. Transition and Drain Preparation
The integration with the existing plumbing is where precision is paramount. The drain assembly must be installed at the correct height—slightly lower than the intended finished tile line—to allow the new tile to cover the flange securely. To support the tile profile, a "mud pan" or a sloped mortar bed is often constructed around the drain. This tailored shape directs water directly into the trap while providing a tight bond for the thinset mortar used for the final tile installation.

The Final Tile Surface
