Understanding where drain flies breed and lay eggs is crucial for effective control and prevention. Specific Breeding Locations Drain flies require a specific environment for their lifecycle, which consists of stagnant moisture and a significant accumulation of organic debris. This debris forms a slimy, gelatinous layer called biofilm, and it is within this muck that the female fly lays irregular masses of 30 to 100 eggs. Female drain flies will lay up to 200 eggs at a time directly in the organic debris along pipe walls and sink drains.
Eggs hatch in as little as a day or two, and the drain fly larvae feed on the organic debris in which they hatched. Drain flies undergo a multi-stage lifecycle that enhances their resilience in various environments. Females lay 30 to 100 eggs in moist, organic-rich settings, often in the gelatinous film found in drains.
Drain flies breed in polluted, shallow water or highly moist organic solids. You will find the eggs, larvae and pupae in the muck, slime, or gelatinous film often accumulating on the sides of drains (Figure 3) and condensate pipes for air conditioners (Figure 4), in the sewage filtration tanks, septic tanks and moist compost. The female drain fly lays eggs in a moist, protected area, which hatch into larvae after 24-48 hours.
The larvae feed on organic matter and develop into pupae, which eventually emerge as adult drain flies. Understanding the life cycle of drain flies is essential for controlling and preventing infestations. Adult drain flies live for about 20 days, during which they will breed only once, often within hours of emerging from their pupal casings.
Females will lay their eggs (between 30 and 100) just above the water line inside moist drains. Drain flies tend to lay eggs in areas that make perfect environments such as wet matter and build up in clogged and greasy drains, sewage, compost piles, storm drains and septic tanks. The eggs are small, typically less than 1 millimeter, and appear nearly translucent or pale white, making them difficult to see.
Female drain flies deposit these oval-shaped eggs in irregular masses, with a single female capable of laying between 15 to 100 eggs at a time.
