The auxiliary fan in the BMW E39 is engineered to activate during low-speed driving or high engine load, drawing cool air through the radiator when the vehicle’s primary cooling system is insufficient. Unlike standard fans, it responds dynamically to temperature fluctuations, preventing dangerous overheating and protecting the engine from thermal stress. Regular inspection and cleaning of its wiring and blades ensure peak efficiency, making it essential for weekend drivers and collectors alike.

A failing auxiliary fan often manifests through overheating warnings, reduced engine performance, or visible damage to the fan motor or wiring. Routine checks should include verifying fan operation during simulated high-load conditions, inspecting for debris around the fan housing, and testing the electrical connections. Timely maintenance not only prevents breakdowns but enhances overall drivability—especially vital for preserving the integrity of the E39’s mechanical design.
